May 5, 2007 A tornado wiped out most of a small farming town in southwestern Kansas, killing seven people and injuring at least 63, emergency officials said today.
The funnel cloud hit Greensburg yesterday evening, smashing buildings, overturning vehicles and knocking out communications towers. Aerial television news footage showed ruins throughout the community of about 1,800 people.
"There is still a possibility that we do not have all the people accounted for," said a spokeswoman for the state emergency management agency.
The tornado was "massive," measuring up to 1 mile (1.6 km) wide, said Michael Lacy, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Dodge City, Kansas. Winds were as strong as 165 mph (266 kph), he said.
Severe thunderstorms continued to move through the US Midwest.
Greensburg's hospital and schools were destroyed. The water tower next to the town's main tourist attraction - the world's largest hand-dug well - was damaged, Mr Lacy said.

A massive "supercell" thunderstorm spawned massive tornadoes along a more than 100 mile long path in central Kansas Friday night and Saturday morning, killing at least seven and injuring more than sixty. And, there are still dozens of people unaccounted for. Massive damage occurred in the town of Greensburg and the entire town is being evacuated at this time.
Small tornadoes began in far south Kansas near the town of Protection about 8pm central time. As the supercell moved northeast, it spawned a massive tornado, more than a mile wide, about ten miles SSW of the town of Greensburg, population 1,800, that struck the town at about 9:55. The high school and junior high were destroyed, the main street was destroyed, and the hospital was 80% damaged....
